Human Figure Sculpting

There are unknown forces in nature; when we give ourselves wholly to her, without reserve, she lends them to us; she shows us these forms, which our watching eyes do not see, which our intelligence does not understand or suspect.

François-Auguste Rodin

Working from a life model is essential to understand the structure and gesture of the human figure and to train your powers of observation according to the classical-academic methodologies. The modeling of the human figure provides a solid base, focusing on the development of basic craft skills.

This course is an introduction to the figurative sculpture. Working from life models, naked in contrapposto, we learn to interpret nature using traditional techniques. We start by learning how to set up the model and pay attention to subtle changes in the pose. Contrapposto poses are essential to get an understanding of the anatomy and range between relaxed and tense muscles.

After the introduction to the academic techniques of modeling the human figure, we begin to sculpt a  1/2 natural size figure by using an additive method, where we will build the forms slowly through the three-dimensional drawing. We previously observe the model from a distance and focus on the overall impression and the accuracy of the proportions and the gesture, before moving on to modeling forms and other details. The first step will be to capture the relationship between the body (pelvis) and egg (rib cage).

Each student will receive an individual daily critique throughout the course.
