Residency of Art Program

What is the Barcelona Residency of Art?

The Barcelona Academy of Art offers their students and external candidates an opportunity to start their professional career in a studio where they will receive the necessary knowledge that will support their beginnings in the artistic/cultural industry.

The studios are located at the BAA Sarrià facility, and students have open access to the installations during an extensive schedule. In these studios, artists work on personal projects, while receiving advice from tutors and other external professionals from the artistic/cultural industry: artists, curators, art critics and art and culture theorists, among others.

The student/artist will be part of a community of figurative artists, strengthening the current trend towards contemporary realism, a movement lead and supported by the European Museum of Modern Art [MEAM] in Barcelona.

Who is it for?

The Artistic Residency program is a highly specialised program in the field of Fine Arts. It is aimed for people who are interested in pursuing a career as an artist, within the parameters of traditional training as the solid foundation that will encourage individual research to find their own artistic voice.

Students graduated from the BAA and other ARC approved schools are potential candidates. In parallel, the program is open to those artists who wish to apply for a place without having graduated from a school with an academic program, and whose portfolio is of exceptional quality.

Objectives

The main objective of this final training level is for the student/artist to find his/her own artistic voice and, therefore, make a living as a professional painter, sculptor or digital artist. It promotes the development and research of the students’ own artistic identity, while working towards consolidating their profession.

We seek to support artists when faced with the instability of the art industry and the difficulties in finding a work space suited for their needs. We intend to support and enhance their creative time by providing the facilities while developing their careers as professional artists.

The program’s objectives can be summarized as:

  • Support students in becoming creative professionals in the artistic/cultural industry.
  • Exhibit the artists’ personal artwork.
  • Help students find career opportunities.
  • Introduce students into the contemporary art market.
  • Give advice from professors and other specialists to ensure the highest quality in their professional performance.
  • Reinforce concepts at a legislative level and communication trends in the artistic/cultural market to facilitate the understanding of the industry.
  • Promote teamwork to strengthen the trend of contemporary figurative art.

Methodology

The Residency of Art Program aims to help artists focus and develop their own work through the vision and guidance of our team of professors and other specialists. Each resident will have their own studio to work on personal creations.

During the First year of the Residency, students will choose if they want to receive a complete training in Marketing for Artists (for beginners or professional artists) and also participate in Masterclasses given by personalities of the creative industry. In this course, we will help artists discover or strengthen their own language and identity, and provide the tools and strategies of communication and promotion of their work. Residents will also gain a deep understanding of the legal procedures involved in the artistic/cultural industry.

From the Second Year, students can choose to continue the Marketing for Artists course and also keep on having regular tutorials by personalities involved in the cultural industry.

Every year, the residents will put on three different exhibitions (one of which will be an Open Studio). The student will have free access to all sessions of human figure drawing, which take place daily at the BAA Poblenou (upon availability).

Scholarships

The students at the Barcelona Academy of Arts, who had successfully completed their study program, and would like to enroll in the Residency of Art Program are eligible to apply for a scholarship by requesting the form at the end of their academic year. (Exclusive promotion only for Barcelona Academy of Art students).
