Portrait Drawing

The aim of this course will be to introduce students to all aspects of portrait drawing from direct observation. A painterly approach to drawing that focuses on the importance of shape design and edge in relation to the form. You will train with a procedural approach, which forces you to work simple, then gradually progress to more complexity.


  • Understand the structure of the head from multiple perspectives.
  • Create the illusion of the form and clearly represent the 3D aspect through drawing.
  • Use abstraction and simplification as a way to obtain a clear similarity with the model.
  • Learn different ways to prepare the surface of the paper using different materials such as ink, watercolor, pastel, graphite, etc. as one more way to create atmosphere.
  • Use expressive markings to add emotional meaning to the drawing.
  • Learn to analyze drawings of ancient masters and see what makes them unique.


Day 1:

Basic introduction to the fundamental aspects of drawing.
– Blocking
– Edges
– Basic light and shape

Live model and individual reviews.

Day 2:

Structure of the head
– We will discuss the important aspects of the skull and how it affects the shape of the surface.
– Different planes of the head.
– The student will also make small sketches of the skull and head of Asaro.

Day 3:

Materials Workshop
We will discuss different ways to create surfaces to draw and how this can affect the environment of the final drawing. Examples: toning with ink, watercolor, graphite, pastel, etc. and how to choose a paper depending on the surface we use.

Expressive ways to create atmosphere in the drawing.
How to use different materials to explore a variety of brands

Analysis of drawings of old masters.

Payment method

Once a student is admitted, he/she will be asked to confirm his/her place with a non- refundable deposit (via bank transfer) equivalent to 10% of the total course amount.

The rest of the registration fee should be paid on the dates indicated in the enrolment confirmation email.

Should the student fail to pay the corresponding amount on the dates indicated, his/her place will automatically be available for a student in the waiting list.
