Workshop Jordan Sokol & Amaya Gurpide

This 5 day course will focus on one portrait. The time will be divided into drawing on the first two days with Amaya and painting on the final 3 days with Jordan. Each day will start with an instructional demonstration to introduce major aspects of each artists thought process. Students will work on their own pieces the rest of the day as they are individually coached by the teacher. The class will explore linear and mass oriented approaches, balancing an abstract comprehension of the visual experience with a conceptual understanding of form in space. Particular emphasis will be placed on the interpretive nature of observation, dissecting and editing visual information to influence the narrative and psychological impact of the work.

Amaya Gúrpide was born in Spain. She formally began studying art at the age of 16 in the School of Arts of Pamplona. After graduating in 1994 she began studying under the Spanish painter Mikel Esparza and was encouraged to move to New York City in 1999 to broaden her studies in figure painting and drawing. Over the next ten years in New York Amaya studied under the tutelage of various prominent painters at The Art Students League, The National Academy of Design and The Grand Central Academy.

In 2014 Amaya was invited to move back to the U.S. to take part in the creation of the first US branch of The Florence Academy of Art in Jersey City where she currently has a studio and teaches as a Principal Instructor. In 2016 she was an adjunct Professor at The New York Academy of Art.

Amaya’s work has been exhibited internationally, and her drawings and paintings are in private collections throughout Europe and the USA.

Jordan Sokol was born in Queens, NY. His work focuses on the human figure. In 2013, after a decade of studying and teaching in Italy he moved to Spain and began teaching privately from his studio in Madrid. In 2014 Jordan returned to the United States upon the invitation of The Florence Academy of Art to open their first official U.S. branch in Jersey City, NJ where he is currently the Academic Director.

Jordan has taught drawing and painting workshops throughout the United States and Europe including the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, the Canova Atelier in Rome, the Janus Collaborative in New York, and the Art Students League of New York.

His work has been featured in numerous publications including ‘Lessons in Classical Drawing’ as well as ‘Lessons in Classical Painting: Essential Techniques from Inside the Atelier’ by Juliette Aristides and in 2013 was honored as one of the ’25 Artists of Tomorrow’ by American Artist Magazine.

Jordan’s work has exhibited internationally, including London’s National Portrait Gallery as part of the 2015 BP Portrait exhibition, and is represented by Arcadia Contemporary in Los Angeles.
