Écorché

It is necessary to place nerves and muscles in their own place, and then you put on the flesh and the skin. Here some may say to me that I have said elsewhere that the painter is only concerned with what is seen, and not with what is hidden. There is no doubt about that but, to make a dressed figure, one must first draw the naked figure, and then put the clothes on its members; and, similarly, to paint a nude it is necessary to first place the bones and muscles, and then to cover them with flesh, so that their true place is always known.

León Battista Alberti, “Trattato della pittura” [Translated from toscan from the original by the same author “De Pictura” (1435)]

Écorché is an exercise in drawing, painting or sculpture of the human figure that shows the muscles of the body without the skin and subcutaneous fat, so that the skeletal and muscular system are visible. The term was commonly used in the French Academies of the 19th century.

As a method of anatomical study, écorché involves a constructive approach to modelling the figure, sculpting the bones and muscles layer by layer, working up to the most superficial layers of the body. This allows the artist to reach a deeper level of understanding of how bone, muscle and fat combine to create the human form.

Objectives

  • Achieve an excellent level of understanding of how bone, muscle and fat combine to create the human form.
  • Learn to simplify the complex forms of the human body in order to build the figure from imagination.
  • Learn how to use anatomy as a means to tell stories, to give life and movement to the figure.
