The Academy

What is the Barcelona Academy of Art?

The Barcelona Academy of Art is a highly specialised school dedicated to the teaching of drawing, painting, sculpture and digital art with a complete curriculum and teaching methods derived from the classical-realist tradition. It is a methodology based on the Renaissance, and revived by the main academic realist ateliers of the late nineteenth century (especially in the teachings of master painters such as Jean-Léon Gérôme, Léon Bonnat and Carolus-Durán).

The philosophy of the academy, which underlies its curriculum and its teaching method, requires a return to the direct study of nature and to the old masters as the foundation and point of reference of all artistic knowledge.

Learning to draw, paint and model with control, as well as understanding the theory behind the method, will not only serve the person and artist who wants to grow as a professional in the fine arts, but also those people who want to dedicate themselves to the field of digital illustration, design, or positions related to the film industry and video games, among other professions.

Who is it aimed at?

The academy is aimed at persons interested in learning to paint, draw and sculpt in a traditional way, within the parameters of figuration and realism as a representational art form. Together with the deep and practical knowledge of the materials and artistic methods derived from academicism, students will consolidate a good base as the starting point of their personal artistic development.

Students must be disciplined and follow every step of the program to master certain skills instead of remaining in a stationary situation of free experimentation.

  • Provide students with a solid technical base based on traditional artistic teaching methodologies.
  • To know and motivate critical thinking and research among students as an fundamental competence in the contemporary artistic sector.
  • Provide students with communication resources, practical and discursive skills to optimally assume the challenges of the current artistic world.
  • To promote the knowledge and mastery of the adequate resources to enhance their artistic identity through self-knowledge and exploration of their own artistic expression.

The works that the students will produce in the school are artistic exercises specially designed to help them build and master the fundamental skills beginning with drawing. These skills will provide them with the necessary tools to express their ideas and visions through a realistic-figurative language, effectively representing what they see and want to convey.

  • Capacity for rigor, discipline and perseverance.
  • Capacity for self-knowledge and mastery of one’s personality as an artist.
  • Spirit of excellence and search for excellence.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of self-promotion strategies.
  • Knowledge of artistic disciplines.
  • Technical abilities.
  • Respect and understanding of the method used as a basis for artistic learning.
  • Mastery of the rules of realistic-figurative academic art to professionalise artistically.
  • Knowledge of historical and current references that affect the professionalisation of the digital sector.

All the professors at the Barcelona Academy of Art are recognised international artists with a traditional training. The staff consists of painters, sculptors and digital artists who currently work in their respective sectors and sell their works within the contemporary art market.

Training program

The training program of the Barcelona Academy of Art consists in the regular programs of Drawing, Painting, Sculpture and Digital art & Design, and is complemented by seminars, weekend courses and special courses (Easter and Summer) that will help students deepen the learning and improvement of methods, procedures, approaches and techniques at the hands of the best professionals.

Once the study program is completed, the Barcelona Academy of Art offers its own students and possibly external students the opportunity to start their professionalisation process at the Barcelona Residency of Art. The students of this program will have a personal workshop where they can produce their own work but also receive the necessary knowledge that will guarantee their entrance in the contemporary art market.

The Barcelona Academy of Art also offers the BAA Junior program, where young people can explore ideas or concepts while receiving highly specialised training that will allow them to increase their graphic-plastic skills and abilities.

All regular courses can be completed full-time or part-time.
